Media Briefing of Assistant Secretary Charles Jose

on the Second APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting and Related Meetings (SOM2)

18 May 2015, 1100H

International Media Center, Ecovillage, Boracay

With only a few days remaining prior to the Second APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting and the Meeting for Ministers Responsible for Trade, the National Organizing Council has strengthened all its preparations and logistical requirements for the ministers, senior officials and members of economy delegations with the help of government agencies and local government units (LGUs)to ensure their safety and wonderful stay in the one of the world-renowned beaches in the Philippines.

On May 9, the various technical working groups and committees began to conduct workshops, plenary sessions, symposium, conferences and dialogues to have a follow-through on certain initiatives, policies and capacity-building programs towards achieving APEC’s goals of trade liberalization, business facilitation and economic, which they previously discussed in SOM1 in Clark, Pampanga last February. These preparatory meetings’ outputs will be reported to the senior officials who will then integrate all the work being done in APEC’s committees, working groups and other sub-fora on May 20 to 21.

Out of 37 different technical working group-level meetings covering the areas of trade and investment liberalization, business facilitation, and economic cooperation in the fields of Oceans and Fisheries; Food Security; Science Technology and Innovation; Higher Education; Human Resource Development; Emergency Preparedness; Internet Economy; Connectivity; Economic and Technical Cooperation; Structural Reform; Counter-Terrorism, Telecommunication; Tourism; and Trade in Services, 29 were already concluded as of yesterday while eight (8) are scheduled to be finished by May 20.

For SOM2, 1, 500 delegates registered.

From the moment they set foot in our country, their transfer in airports, jetty ports, hotels, conference venues, and their tours and activities have been arranged. We continue to assist delegates to ensure that they have a venue that is conducive to reflection and open discussions with other participants. We ask the local residents to extend their support to us in this endeavor.

Boracay will not just be a place for summer vacation and night life this May, but a place where two of the major APEC meetings will be held.

Finally, the APEC Senior Officials will meet again at the Third Senior Officials’ Meeting and Related Meetings in September 2015 in Cebu City.
