The Philippines chaired and hosted the APEC meetings for the first time in 1996. The most high-profile meeting, the APEC Leaders’ Meeting, was held in Subic Bay, Zambales from November 24 to 25.

It was attended by world leaders such as U.S. President Bill Clinton and Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
